Machines- making life Easier or Difficult ?

“ We have developed machines to make our lives easier. “ was the central idea of the last unit taken by Grade-3. But, somehow we teachers felt that this unit will make students’ life difficult ! The reason behind it, was that we have to teach our LITTLE ones the HUGE concepts of simple machines, friction and gravity. So, we decided to make it interesting for them and their life easier !
We started the unit with the tuning-in activity of provocation table, where we kept a large number of objects like juicer-mixer, skates, ladder, spoon, bat etc. The students used their thought process to inquire the relation between all the objects that they explored and this activity tuned them for the unit. The students had fun in their learning about the concepts of gravity and friction, with the help of monkey bars and slides in the Jungle gym. The workstation activity for understanding levers, provided them with hands on experience and even helped them in understanding the different classes of lever. Students gave a very enthusiastic and overwhelming response to the cart and winch making activity. The list of learning experiences in this unit was a long one but we would like to mention a few. They were: screw inspectors, work-relay games, interviewing school workers, making 3D-models of simple machines, making lemonade and viewing videos about complex machines.
Overall this unit, made the students and the teachers, THINKERS and this unit was so much enjoyed by the students that even after completion of this unit, whenever they come across any machine, they identify the simple machines in them.

Editoral....

Grade – 6 Debated on various issues which included – Do we need a school uniform? Do children need to be censored in the viewing of TV/Computer sites? Do extracurricular activities form an integral part of our education? They penned their perspectives in the form of editorial pieces. Read and enjoy. Do send in your comments to take the discussions further. We should have school uniform in school I feel students should have uniform in school because wearing a uniform has many advantages. Although I feel people should have the right to choose what they want to wear, I also think if students wear uniforms, they will remember that they are students and they will respect their uniform which represents their own school. It will also remind them that they are students and their only only aim is to learn. Uniforms give student’s a sense of order. Uniforms give equality to everyone, because not paying so much attention to your or other student’s clothes will make it easier to concentrate on learning and studying. It also improves school discipline as it discourages students from wearing unsuitable clothes, and bringing fashion into school. Also imagine choosing clothes everyday if you don’t have a uniform it becomes a fashion parade that takes up so much of our time (especially for a girl). Uniform changes the whole personality of the student, students look smart in uniforms. Also it is only in school when one gets to wear uniforms; once you are grownup we don’t get the opportunity to wear uniforms. We also come to know from the uniform which school children belong to. So I think, for the above reasons given school uniforms are important to wear for all students. Anoushka Jariwala

Running with the wind
Wonder if your child is tomorrow’s Einstein or Usain Bolt or somebody great-so for a start, concentrate on his/her extra-curricular activities. A child should have extra-curricular activities in his/her daily routine because if not so a child can become gloomy, he/she can grow fat, they can start feeling lethargic and they can contract to many kinds of illness. After all most of the kids mostly spend their time on television, computer games etc. Instead children should be encouraged by their parents to go and play outside for at least for an hour. In this case many countries have established laws for this cause, such as in Britain children should have 2-3 hours minimal play time, if not the parent/ guardian will have to face consequences. But there may be some schools which only concentrate on a child’s academic performance therefore resulting a child to be a nerd, weakling, etc. There maybe also some schools who provide extra-curricular activities after school hours and then there are schools which focus on both. Despite all this a child should live a balanced life giving equal time to all activities. The child should be enrolled in the activities he/she prefers which may not necessarily be related to sports, it could also be writing. There always should be a choice for the child in selecting his activities otherwise the kid may also, due to lack of practice, weaken in the activity he prefers. Who knows, if the right step is taken now, the child may work wonders in his/her life?

Uniformity and dignity
Uniform shows uniformity and also shows respect towards the school. It gives recognition to the student and his school. If the children go anywhere for instance on fieldtrip and get missed they can be easily found by their uniform and the logo of the school which is always stitched on the uniform. More over all children cannot afford wearing new clothes to the school. Sometimes civil dresses are not comfortable because we have extracurricular activities like physical education where in we can’t do skating and exercise properly. I strongly feel that there should be consistency and homogeneity which is provided by wearing uniform.
Deval Ragadwala

Freedom in taking their own decisions
I feel that children must wear their own choice of clothes because children take good decisions. They have good knowledge to choose their own clothes. Sometimes they make mistakes but they learn from it. Their choice of clothes could be good. They learn to take decisions at school, at home, from elders and sometimes from books because books have excellent knowledge. In my opinion piercing must be allowed because it looks cool and smart. When the piercing is going on, it pains a lot. But when it is Completed it looks beautiful, cool and smart. Some people who are cowards, in them fear comes faster and some people who are fearless can get piercing done and they don’t do ouch! Ouch! Piercing can be done on ears eyes, nose, tongue, lips etc. Some people who wear gold and diamond ornaments must be responsible, because, some people steal it very quickly and we even don’t realize it. When we wear it-it looks very cool and smart. Some people keep showing off with it. Some people keep playing with it and their mind could be disturbed by this and not allow them to concentrate on their studies. In my opinion permanent tattoo should be allowed because it looks nice on your body and a beautiful design comes on your body. It pains a lot when it is going but when it is completed it looks Beautiful.

Parents should not allow their children to watch T.V If parents will give freedom to their children to see T.V or play computer games then they will misuse the freedom. Which can lead to: attention deficit disorder, they will get bored with study, not play outside and upset other family members. That’s all I think.
Dhruv

The changing world I believe that children should not be censored to watch T.V, videogames etc. Parents should not interfere in a child’s life. On video games we can learn to defend ourselves through some games like GTA and road rage. As we all know that reading is the one of the fastest ways to learn, then if we read magazines, what’s wrong in it? We can also get to know what is happening around us. In some books real life situations are also given so a child would understand feelings of others. Internet is the one of the fastest ways to learn so we can search it. After hard work your mind needs refreshment so you can play games on the computer. On T.V there are not only cartoon channels available, we are provided with many good channel like Discovery, Animal Planet. If parents take decisions on behalf of the child about what is wrong and what in right then how will a child learn to take decisions. If parents will not allow children to do internet browsing so a child will wonder what’s there on internet that the parents are not allowing him to see, so he can get wrong information about the internet. One of my friends told that children would get spoilt if they are not censored in the watching of T.V, videogames etc. Excessive T.V can cause children to become lazy and can create problems in eyes also. Children watch T.V because cartoons attract them. A child would be mentally affected if they see some cartoons like Shinchan because he is involved in bad action. Sometimes if there is an exam a student may not study so parents should censor in such cases. Students will get spoilt if they see adult sites so parents should censor them. Freedom is not for everyone but only for those children who can understand it. But with freedom responsibility and trust comes and if you break the trust you will not get that freedom again.
Harshil Dhaniwal

Children should be censored
We had a debate on whether children should be censored in the viewing of TV, computers, reading books, magazines etc. I am also for it and against it. I think that children should be given freedom because they feel proud and they tend to make fewer mistakes. On the computer most of the sites are not good for children. But some like Wikipedia; Wiki source etc are such sites that provide almost all the information they need. On TV most of the channels like Cartoon Network, Pogo are not necessary for children to see. There are many wonderful channels like Discovery, Fox History and National Geographic etc. that are good for children. They can also view channels like NDTV, CNBC, 24 x 7 etc. for daily news. Children can read Non-Fiction books for knowledge and sometimes Fiction books for being imaginative. If the children are censored they will stop taking decisions and leave it to their parents to decide and will not become independent. They will need that person every time for making decisions for them; even in a crisis. Some children go to useless sites and chat, some watch unnecessary channels - at that time they should be censored. If parents censor their children, they should censor themselves first. They should not see excess TV, surf the computer, read books, magazines. It’s true that children should be censored, I agree with that but; first parents should control themselves and be censored. The Essence of School Life
How Extra-curricular Activities can affect a child’s life. Education is learning. And to call one educated, one must know something about each and every topic. And extra-curricular activities are one of those topics. They are a necessary part of education. I believe that extra-curricular activities are an integral part of education because they provide great exercise. Dance is good exercise as well as is entertaining. Art is something through which you can enjoy, feel relaxed and express your creativity. There are many extra-curricular activities that help us in our day-to-day lives, like cooking and stitching. We can even choose one as a career or vocation. We can become an interior designer through art; a choreographer through dance or a musician through music. It brings out our hidden talents. We can take a break from studying, do one of these, and learn something all the same. And not everyone is good at academics. One must really try hard to utilize one’s multiple intelligences. And by putting an extra-curricular activity into practice, one will gain a tremendous sense of achievement. One will learn to take pride in one’s work and appreciate other’s work. Children will learn to get along with others. They will gain massive self-confidence. A simple extra-curricular activity can change a child’s personality, attitude and nature.
Pahini

Extra Curricular Activities
I believe that extracurricular activities are an integral part of education. I know that every child is creative in his own way. If children do not play, they will not be body smart and if they will go out and not play with other children they will be bored. The children will stop enjoying their lives. As in Taare Zameen Par, the child was not well educated but was very creative in his own way and his parents were proud of him. Imagination is important because if you will not imagine what you would like to be in your life you will not be able to do future planning. Children’s creativities and imagination will increase a lot with extra-curricular activities. As you know, that if every time children come to school for studying and if their minds will not be refreshed then the children will not be creative and imaginative at all. They will not gain knowledge about sports, dance, drama, art, music etc.
Parth Reshamwala

Censorship
Children should not be censored in the watching of TV in terms of content & time. I support children because it’s their own life and it’s make them the perfect people to decide what to do with it. If they are only studying their mental health will suffer and in mental health playing is important. In some schools what is done, is that whatever the teacher does, students have to do the same thing and that is wrong because children have their own thoughts and children’s thoughts are very interesting and very creative. If we will only make them study, they will not concentrate on social activities like skating, swimming, karate, football, cricket and Jungle Gym. If they will do activities on their own then they will perfect it. If we will only make them study and parents tell them not to play or watch TV their mind goes into that only, and they wonder “Why are they telling me no, or today is the series Ben 10”. The children should watch TV but within limits and they should also watch the Discovery channel or the news. This can also help them in their studies. Parents and teachers make studying a burden so that children undergo stress and feel overburdened and they are unable to do any work. Burden is that which makes a child uncomfortable and if the parents will give too much of burden then the child will become destructive. Instead of that parents should take the child to the garden to refresh their minds. So, I am requesting parents and teachers to not give lots of burden otherwise what I have told would happen.

Editorial:
children should not be censored in the watching of T.V and play games of their own choice. Children should watch TV and play games of their own choice because by playing games and watching TV they can forget their problems. There is a limit in playing games and watching TV they should play for 1 or half hour because if they will see for more than 1 hour their eyes would get damaged. Children should play good games and not bad games because they will be affected by it when they will grow up. Children should not watch cartoon channels they should watch reference channels like Discovery, National Geographic etc. If they will watch cartoon channels children can’t get knowledge. Children should not always play they should do sometimes research say on any band or any author or famous person. They should not watch TV all the time even though they are watching cartoon channels or any reference channels; they should go out and play with their friends. TV could make them idle so they should go out and play. Children should play cricket, football etc. to keep their body fit. Children could play indoor games also, like table tennis, chess, carom and many more games. Children should play chess because we need to run our mind in chess. We should do cycling, skating and swimming to increase our height. Sometimes children make good choices of reading activities like reading books on any subject and playing games like cricket, football etc. or any other sport. If they are determined they will do the work well. If they don’t make choices their parents will have to make choices for them. It means that when they will grow up they will have to take advice from other people. If children will not make choices they will not learn by themselves.

Parental decisions?
I believe children should buy clothes and accessories which their parents tell them. We all know that they are a little old fashioned but they want you to be comfortable with your clothing. You sometimes wear very tight pants but you are not comfortable with it when you are walking and sitting or you wear very loose pants and it keeps sliding down. It sometimes reaches the ground and you can trip over it and hurt yourself. You sometimes also wear torn Jeans and people think you are wearing an old jean which is torn apart. That gives a bad impression to the people, but parents bring us perfect clothes. But sometimes we ought to take our own decisions like when we are going to a birthday party we should wear clothes of our own choice according to dress code. But one shouldn’t wear fashionable clothes and wear simple clothes when going to a devotional place or wedding ceremony. But we are more fashionable in clothing than our parents and we know what we should wear, it’s our choice and parents should let us take our decisions so that when we grow up and we have to take or make a choice, say about haircolour or making tattoos we should be allowed, because it’s our style and fashion. So I strongly believe both parents and children should decide what types of clothes children should wear.

Sayings
I feel that extra curricular activities should be an integral part of education because education means to come up with new things; we need to get motivated and then we will come up with different ideas. Education can be more joyful when we can do it in the form of activities. There should activities like art because children come to school to study but during the whole day they write, read etc. and they get bored and they will not pay attention to studies. They enjoy drawing, coloring, etc. By including these activities they will enjoy coming to school. In music also they will make their own rhythms and will learn to play new instruments. This, they will enjoy very much because most of the children like to dance and make new steps and all their imagination and creativity will develop. They will make these dance steps with their thoughts, and will combine and attach it to their brains. In drama they will learn how to make scripts, how to act and with this their grammar will be develop. Sports will make them flexible, and they will gain knowledge of sports. They will make their own games. That’s why I believe that extra curricular activities should be there in school.

Students should take part in other activities Students should take part in activities which they like and want to do apart from studies. Many of the students should participate in activities like art, dance, sports, music, drama etc. so that they can enjoy and show their talent. They can learn also. It is an exercise. They can become famous people and they can earn more money, name & get love from all over the world. So parents encourage your kids to take part in activities.

School uniforms should be compulsory
The word uniform itself indicates uniformity which a school should always strive to maintain among its students. One of the foremost reasons of having uniforms is that all children are not rich to buy lots of clothes and the children who can afford to do so might show off and also get a false sense of superiority. Having uniforms reduces wastage of time by the children who don’t have to spend time before deciding what they have to wear to school. Another important reason for us to have uniform is that when the school takes the children for field trips or on a camp the people can easily identify from which school the child is. It also helps in case of any emergency e.g.-if a child is lost the child can be easily brought back to school if he/she is wearing uniform. However schools should ensure that uniforms are comfortable at all times even when children play games. The prices also should be affordable as all students are part of a school and as a family we must have a sense of unity and bonding and wearing a common outfit strengthens that sense of belonging and oneness.
Vedanshi

Against extra curricular activities
I did not feel strongly about extra circular activities. All the parents want that their children to study and be educated. If sometimes they are bored they can solve puzzles, play scrabble, read funny books. They can also search for information on science and math. If children are given lots of freedom they can get spoilt and will not have an educated life and because of that they can also become beggars and he or she will not be able to support their parents and by watching excessive television they can also have spectacles. They will not get money and have to take money from others; they cannot make their own house. Children can also go to the garden or somewhere to study. If they are bored they can have a break and then study again and then, when they do not study parents should explain why is studying important in their lives and if they like to go to a library take them and by this, children can also read their own chosen book. Again I am telling, if you will not explain the reason for studying, your children can get spoilt by the freedom given to them by you.
Shivani Ghantiwala

Student should wear uniform
Students should wear uniform because if they are lost they can be found by the Badge of the school. They should wear uniform so if some peoples are poor and can not bring new clothes the rich students who can bring new clothes will make fun of the poor children, and the poor student will force his parents to bring new clothes, in order to show off. Some parents may not be able to buy and some poor children will be so angry that they will leave their homes, and will be in trouble. Children should wear uniform because if there will be an exam and there will not be any uniform they will waste time thinking about what to wear and will be late for exams. If they have to go and comeback from the school walking and if there is an accident and they are unconscious somebody can take them to hospital and from there they will contact be able to contact their school and the school can call their parents. If they go to a picnic all will know that, from which school they have come. If we will wear uniform we will be part of a very –very big family. If students will wear uniform they will feel proud about the school they are part of. They should treasure their uniform so that when they will be very old and their grandson or granddaughter asks them their school’s name they can see their uniform and tell them their school’s name. Grandparents can remember their school by seeing their uniform.

Come..See..Get conquered.. said the invite.

It was an invitation to a “Creative Mela” held at Fountainhead School. It sure was a mela, but with a difference. Various artists from the city had been invited to share their talent with the students & guests and they also had a fabulous display of their creations. Tejas Danecha’s pencil sketches were awesome and so were the water colours by Naisargi Dave. Ankur Desai and Jwalant Patel with their sculptures and Maharshee with his clay modelling were very inspiring. Praveen brown’s caricature drawing was enjoyed by all. Stela Patel and Swati Vachhani encouraged the students to be part of their Kutch art display. Kekul Patel & her team also involved kids for their Mono Painting. Ms. Mona displayed many of the craft items. Noble, Vairagi and Raguveer had organized a splash painting activity for the students where they would use leaves, spoons and brushes to splash paints onto a plain surface. It truly was an activity that students thoroughly enjoyed. Kinjal Shah with her rangoli designs gave a lot of ideas for the coming festive season. Embroidery artists also gave a brilliant display of their work for which Surat is known for. Apart from these artists from outside, Fountainhead School had some great artists among its staff who displayed their creative side with demonstrations of warli painting, origami, nail art, tattooing, mehendi, rangoli, etc. Works of the visiting artists and the creative works of the students were on display. There was also a display of paintings on Gandhiji from the private collection of an art collector in the city. There was a talent corner where parents, visitors and their guests could try their hand at sketching and painting. More than 500 people visited this event and the response from them was overwhelming. “Such events give a great exposure to our children and bring out the creativity in them” commented one parent. Kudos to the organizing team for organizing such an inspirational event.

Spider men in School

Rappelling facilitates an attitude of overcoming challenges. Rappelling brings a powerful sense of accomplishment and is a vital resource in bringing about the realization that not every perceived risk is insurmountable. Rappelling is also known as abseiling and originated as a means of a quick and safe descent after a climb. The idea was to slide down a rope with sufficient friction provided so as to make the speed of descent controllable. Rappelling is now a full-fledged skill by itself and finds application in various fields example where people work on high vertical faces and need a portable means of descent that is also reasonably quick to set-up. Some such applications can be seen among window-cleaners on high-rise buildings, among fire fighters, film stunt-men and even the armed forces. You are attached to a rope via a harness and some hardware like karabiner and descender. The rope passes through a figure 8 descender. Instruction helps participants learn how to control the friction and slow its movement. Speed of descent can be controlled by simply arresting the movement of the rope, so that it can’t pass through the descender as fast. It is very important to wear gloves with a good grip, while rappelling, as tightening grip on a moving rope causes rope burn, particularly if the rope is moving fast through the descender. As a first time experience most of the children were scared and were unsure if they will be able to perform rappelling, the real difficulty only lies in convincing our minds. But, all of them took the risk and successfully took part in the activity. Most frightening for most of them was the beginning as it seems rather daunting to stand on a school building knowing that we will soon be going down with only a rope for safety. The technique easily feels ‘natural’ after the first couple of steps and then, the feeling of suspension over the expanse below is awesome, their fear was gone and they started to enjoy the activity. Even the smaller children were really excited and encouraged their seniors during the activity. I congratulate these children on the courage and enthusiasm they have shown and hope they maintain this in their lives...
The tremendous sense of achievement that follows makes this activity perfect for boosting confidence, create risk takers and bring about the realization that not every seemingly difficult objective is actually so, and we may even enjoy it enough to wish for a repeat!

Field trip to a pet training institute

Excellence (Grade 6), in their UOI under the TDT – ‘Who we are’ is currently doing the unit ‘Learning is a fundamental characteristic of humans that connects them to the world’. As a part of the study, they are studying how animals learn. In order to get a first hands feel of animal learning, we went to the Rider’s Club and Dog Kennel in Essar Township, Hazira on June 26, 2009. At the Rider’s Club, the instructor, Mr. Bhom Singhgave us aninsight into the training
modules of the camels and horses. He explained the methodologies used to make these animals understand and follow commands. They use a lot of appreciation and other positive reinforce-ments to train these animals. At the Dog Kennel, we saw various breeds of dogs (German shepherds, bull dogs, golden terriers, pomerian, pug, Doberman). These have been trained and are used to guard the Essar premises. The dogs have been trained (conditioned) to follow the commands of their master. Students found the visit extremely enriching and is helping them
understand learning patterns in a new light.

Decision Making

Grade 5 started the academic year with the UOI-Who we are?-’Decision making’. Though the topic was complex, the reason for taking this unit was the fact that there was very little reading & writing and a lot more speaking & listening. It is important to develop these skills first before proceeding to reading & writing. It also involved group discussions, role plays, debates, etc where a lot of interaction within the classroom & outside took place and proved to be "breaking the ice" for the new & old students. Students watched movies, "Hum hain raahi pyaar ke" & "Ek ruka hua faisla", took interviews of school staff, prepared interview reports, debated about "Black melons" & "Junk food" , learned how to overcome poor decisions & how to handle peer pressure. It turned out to be truly an enriching experience for the students & me.

Visit to Water Treatment Plants

Grade 3 ( Innovate and Inspire) were touring the city to get a better idea about what happens to the water after we have used it, for their first unit of inquiry about water and its importance.
For this we first visited a color manufacturing unit in Lajjpore, owned by a Fountainhead parent Vaishal Kapadia. There we saw how water is used for making color, drying it and by the people working there. By the time we were out kids were all shades of yellow and red –the two colors which were being manufactured at that time. We all saw how the waste water was treated before disposing it off into the river. The kids impressed Vaishal by answering all the questions about the treatment process—right from coagulation to chlorination and in turn Vaishal answered all their queries to their heart’s content. Next we went to L&T (Sewage Treatment Plant) Paulomi Majumdar was our guide, grade 3 kids did not fail to impress her also. Despite the terrible stench kids were eager to know all about the sewage treatment and they were really amazed by what they learnt about the reuse of waste water. We then visited a Sewage treatment Plant in Bhesan—Yogesh Tailor gave us a tour around the plant, he helped us to understand how water from various parts of the city was brought there for treatment and then released into the river Tapi. The kids felt as if they had entered a mini city of pipes and were very tired from walking around the place but their spirits were still high. At last we got a chance to visit the Rander water works to know how the water from the river is treated before it reaches our homes—Jitendra Patel was our guide for the visit. Once again our kids were full of zest to answer his questions and throw a volley of their questions at him. Through various trips in and around the city kids could get a better and enduring understanding of the treatment process. We all became inquirers and risk takers (entering a world of pipes, slippery roads and looking into deep tanks).

Lemonade Day

Children are the happiness of everyone’s life. Specially small ones know how to love and how to gain love. From the beginning of the year( 2009), mother’s pride is seeing interest from Fountainhead School ,where they have found no binding regulations/rules so all through the day they are just enjoying freedom with learning experiences.
Nursery’s 1st UOI is about Senses. So each day they are exploring their senses through different activities. One of them was ‘Lemonade Day’ (as a tasting activity). So first they came to know about ‘what is Lemonade’? Some of them said ‘its just a lemon’ and some one said ‘its yellow in colour’ and someone said ‘don’t wonder’ and someone said ‘think’ and someone else said ‘something to drink’. Kids are great inquirers and reflectors and creative too!! Thereafter the teacher had arrange water, sugar, salt etc and they said , ‘Wow! we love to have ‘Nimbu pani’ .
Then with the help of the teacher(me) they mixed sugar and salt in the water and offcourse they tried to squeeze the lemon, but their tiny hands got tired so I did it, but they
were proud to say that they have made it, as I was. During class discussion they said ‘when I will reach home I will teach mama how to make lemonade.’ I am glad to see such great confidence from those two and half year old kids. And those little ones have become more independent and confident to handle/do any work in all circumstances. We believe that exposure adds to the children’s sociability. And Fountainhead gives them variable exposure to overcome all their life’s blemishes to achieve their goals of life. We all are learners so we have a long path to achieve and I am always there to help my kids( in any difficult situation)to achieve their aims which is to be confident, independent as well as be a good learner.

Hole in the Wall

A unique computer experiment is transforming the lives of underprivileged children. It was also the real inspiration for the movie "Slumdog Millionaire"
From around the village another 20 children aged between six to
fourteen, run over and crowd , keen to see what this mysterious addition to their remote community can do. Men came from the city the day before, built a brick hut in the middle of the
village and positioned the screen facing out from a window. The children were only told that this new machinery was for them to play with.Within hours , a boy and other children are playing games and looking at Walt Disney websites , despite this being the first time they have encountered a computer.Similar scenes have occurred across India in some 300 places in the last ten years. The kiosks were conceived by Professor Sugata Mishra. The "Hole in the Wall" kiosks have provided thousands of children from impoverished backgrounds with access to the PC. They can be found in public locations all over the country from the Himalayas to Andhra and Trivandrum, but what’s remarkable about them is that, with no adult input whatsoever, children have used it to learn English, maths and in several cases , to escape a future of laboring or farming to study politics, physics or biotechnology at university. Mitra realized that a mixture of group discussion, leaving the children to learn for themselves and a desire to impress their peers and elders was a powerful combination for getting them to study unaided." Teachers ask me, " Is this real education?," says Mitra. " But if you are learning, getting answers right and remembering them, what else wereyou going to do in class."The Hole in the Wall has won Mitra many awards, but he has never made any money from it.Excerpts from an article in Reader’s Digest June -2009—A Hole In the Wall.

PYP Workshop at Fountainhead School

"How do we implement what we have read and discuss during our trainings?" "What does ........... mean?" "How do we actually make the PYP happen in our classroom / school?" These were some of the questions teachers at Fountainhead had to answer during, a PYP school workshop organised for all the teachers from 16th – 18th July 2009. The Head of the School as well as The PYP Coordinator also attended the workshop along with us. We had two workshop leaders,
Marion Chapman from IB school Singapore and Glenn James from an IB school Thailand. They are teachers with an experience of more than 5 years in PYP.This workshop addressed the needs of the teachers & Coordinators who will be expected to work with a school’s existingprogramme of inquiry and already established units of inquiry. It was also suitable for teachers who have been working since a year with this programme to revisit the basic philosophy and programme framework with a view to improve implementation and development of the units in their classrooms. The overall purpose of the workshop was to explore all the aspects of the PYP curriculum through Making the PYP Happen – A curriculum framework for international primary education. The workshop made us all knowledgeable. We learnt how to analyse, refine and evaluate the school’s programme of inquiry, How to deconstruct a unit planner, How to collaboratively plan a unit of inquiry which increases the effectiveness and coherence of learning, How to work collaboratively with other teachers, Teaching and learning takes place when a range and balance of teaching strategies are selected appropriately to meet learning needs. We also became more familiar with the Making the PYP happen document and the OCC (Online Curriculum Centre).
Apart from the formal sessions we also had planned informal sessions with the workshop leaders where we exchanged a lot of ideas which were very helpful to all of us. In these sessions we discussed our planners and the leader contributed their ideas to make it more happening in the classrooms. The leaders also shared their experiences working in IB schools. The in school workshop was a great success and our understanding of the PYP has increased in leaps and bounds.

Night in the morning

Wednesday was the date for the longest solar eclipse, a rare phenomenon and Surat was among the few cites which witnessed this once in a life time view. We at Fountainhead were also all set to view this spectacular event. All prior arrangements were made to view this, glasses were gathered from around the city and all students were excited to come down at 5:30 AND SEE THIS ECLIPSE. But nature had something else in mind, because of incessant rain on Tuesday and layers of clouds in the skies on Wednesday morning it became difficult for gazers to get a view of the total solar eclipse. Students were briefed with the details of the solar eclipse before viewing it by Head Of school. However it did not dampen our spirits, it was a unique experience with morning turning into night for more than three minutes. After the solar eclipse was over students and teachers had a good breakfast and went for a morning walk to Kunkni village, in the way to the village they saw many creepers like dead snakes, snails, frogs etc and creatures also picked up plastic waste lying on the road which was fun, a sort of an adventure walk and learning experience for them. After a walk for an hour they returned back to school and started with their daily classes. Overall the solar eclipse was a life time experience for everyone at Fountainhead school.

Knowing me, knowing you, knowing all

We have to respect our elders", "We respect God", that was the prior knowledge of grade 1 children at the beginning of the UOI, "Knowing and respecting ourselves helps us develop respect for others". To further build up on their prior knowledge we made a lesson plan to bolster student self-esteem (respect) and to build class pride.
We began by asking students, "Who has something that they really do well?" After a brief discussion about some of those talents, we passed out papers and asked the students to write down 5 things that they do well. The teachers allowed students to come up and select 5 different coloured paper strips. Using markers, we had the students write one talent on each strip of paper. We demonstrated how to create a paper chain with their strips; linking their talents together to create one long class chain. We had students stand and hold the ever-growing chain as we linked it together, until all were linked. Once the entire chain was constructed and linked together, all students were standing holding their portion. We took the inquiry further by asking the class what this chain demonstrates. (The fact that all the students have talents.) The students came up with "We are all similar yet different, and we need to respect others". "We have different talents and we may not be good at the thing which our friend is good at". We hung the chain up in the room as a reminder that the students are all good at something.
This was indeed a great activity to start the school year with.

No more running away from numbers

An inquiry begins by building upon prior knowledge and facilitating the students to explore more about it. All the students in grade 1 knew numbers and number names from 1 to 100. This was their prior knowledge. Then we built up on this by letting them explore missing numbers from 1 to 100, working through the concept of greater than and less than numbers and place value through different activities. For this, we used place value cards, judo cubes as well as Montero cubes. The activity in the class with the use of flash cards was very interesting for the students. Two students were asked to hold number flash cards and the class was asked to identify the number name, explain the place value and the expanded form. Through maths we also introduced differentiated learning. We made different stations in the class room. One station had judo cubes; the others had Montero cubes and flash cards. The students were allowed to move from one station to another. They enjoyed it thoroughly. One of them said "we can understand place value with so many different things. This is fun."The students also made their own Montero cubes on the basis of numbers given to them and explained place value by colouring tens and units. One of the students commented "maths is quite interesting. We get so involved that we don’t understand whether we are studying or playing."The greatest satisfaction for us is that the students look forward to the maths period in their class time-table.

Role play: Resolving conflicts.

Conflicts are a regular part of daily life for school students. It is difficult for young children to put themselves in someone else’s shoes and understand his or her viewpoint, molehills quickly grow into mountains and simple disagreements turn into real fights. In this unit, the students make decisions to solve conflict situations peacefully by doing a Role Play. Through the role play they come to understand other’s perspectives. They then come up with ideas to resolve these conflicts.

Young minds at work

fresh academic year has started and the school is already buzzing with the chirping and chattering of children who right from the word go, have engaged themselves in doing some meaningful and challenging activities (at their age-level, of course!)
The children of JKG also did not take much time to settle and thereafter got down to serious work. Defying their age, these children were right there at the centre, not only framing the "Essential Agreements " for their class along with the consequences in case of breaching of the agreements but were also, to our pleasant surprise, steering our first UOI "Family and friends" in the right direction to the right destination. Squashing all our apprehensions, these young ones took the UOI ahead with their valuable inputs, lovely thoughts, presentations, role play, family visits puppet shows and drawings. Lots has been happening in the JKG section, but to sum it all, we would say that our young ones have brought life and colour to all the activities taken up. This is just the start and we together with our children will give it a fantastic finish.

SECURITY SUPERVISOR SUPERVISES HIS OWN DREAMS OF DECISIONS

Report by
Aashna Jain

The reason for this interview is to know how others make decisions. I interviewed 30 year old Meghraj Panchkoti who works as a security supervisor in Fountainhead school. He has a family of six and is originally from Nepal.

I gave him a situation and the reply is as follows:
· If on Annual day parents park car incorrectly and if you tell them they shout at you. What will you do?
The first option is to explain the parent & the second one is to ask them to give the keys so that the driver can park it.

· Okay so what are the pros and cons for the first option?
The pro is that it will be a good impression for the school & the con is that if they don’t understand it will be a problem for me.

· What are the pros and cons for the second option?
The pro is that they won’t get late & the con is that they will feel insecure about the car.

· So what do you think is your decision?
I think that the first one is correct.

· What do you think should be your steps for action?
Go to the parents and say- more cars are going to come and they also need to get parked here.

· Now its time to evaluate your decision how do you think is your decision? Excellent/good/bad/poor?

Field trip to the Rider’s Club & Dog Kennel, ESSAR Township, Hazira

Field trip to the Rider’s Club & Dog Kennel, ESSAR Township, Hazira

Excellence (Grade 6), in their UOI under the TDT – ‘Who we are’ is currently doing the unit Learning is a fundamental characteristic of humans that connects them to the world. As a part of the study, they are studying how animals learn. In order to get a first hands feel of animal learning, we went to the Rider’s Club and Dog Kennel in Essar Township, Hazira on June 26, 2009.

At the Rider’s Club, the instructor, Mr. Bhom Singh gave us an insight into the training modules of the camels and horses. He explained the methodologies used to make these animals understand and follow commands. They use a lot of appreciation and other positive reinforcement to train these animals.

At the Dog Kennel, we saw various breeds of dogs (German shepherds, bull dogs, golden terriers, pomerian, pug, Doberman). These have been trained and are used to guard the Essar premises. The dogs have been trained (conditioned) to follow the commands of their master.

Students found the visit extremely enriching and is helping them understand the learning patterns in a new light.

GRADE- 2.

Grade 2 started their Academic year with the Unit of Inquiry-“Relationships are enhanced by learning and understanding other people’s perspective and communicating our own,” The Unit falls under the transdicsiplinary theme “WHO WE ARE”
In this Unit, corresponding to the Line Of Inquiry-Acknowledging other’s perspective, the children enacted on the story “Six blind men & the Elephant.”
In the story, six blind men (not seen an elephant before) happen to touch & feel an elephant. All of them have different perception of the elephant, as each one of them happens to touch different part of the elephant (Tusk, Trunk, Leg, Belly, Ear & Tail). They start arguing until a wise man interrupts & resolves the conflict.
The dramatization was done in the class with a dummy toy elephant as well as a child playing the character of an elephant. The first time, the children enacted with the dialogues/script with them. The next time it was without the script & with a little spontaneity. The children realized how the blind men in the story would have felt, when they enacted the story with a blind fold on their eyes.
The dramatization of the story helps the children to understand the essence of the story in an easy way. Through this activity, it was discussed that “Different people have different perspectives, understanding other’s perspective helps to resolve conflicts.”

Exhibition on Governmental systems

The Central Idea of our UOI; Governmental systems was, “Governmental systems and decisions can promote or deny equal opportunities and social justice”. The students had finished their summative assessments and started the preparations to have an exhibition to show their understanding of the topics.
The exhibition was held on Friday, the 6th of March. The various topics included;
· 5 types of Governments recognized in the world.
· Indian Government system.
· Indian Fundamental Rights and Duties.
· Human Rights Issues around the world.
· Human Rights abusers and Human Rights activists.
· Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
· Interview Reports about the knowledge of Human Rights at school.
· Human Rights Banners.
In addition to the above, we had an “On the Spot” activity for adults where they could express their feeling about any Human Rights issue, which is close to their hearts by painting, sketching, slogans, poetry, songs, essays, etc.
The response to the activity was wonderful with people planning in advance about what they were going to do.
The classroom in the first hour of the exhibition resembled a “fun-fair” with explanations going on all around and the “activity” going on in the middle. The enthusiasm and encouragement shown by visitors, including some parents was wonderful and has to be appreciated.
The students were able to explain the concepts to the best of their abilities and their efforts were well appreciated by the visitors.
The work of all the participants was put on display and it was found that “female infanticide” & “education”, specially of the girl child, were the topics close to the heart, for the majority of them.
All participants got to wear a badge, “I CARE”, to show how much they support the various issues they felt strongly about.
The exhibition ended with the Grade 5 students learning how different people feel about different issues and how they express these feelings. The exhibition truly proved to be an enriching experience to the visitors and me.

Human Rights and the Law

The visit to the office of Advocate Falguni Ghantiwala by my students and me was an enriching experience in itself. Mrs.Ghantiwala took time out from her busy schedule and welcomed us at her office. The students couldn’t contain their excitement and started asking various questions related to Fundamental Rights and Human rights. Mrs. Ghantiwala gave a patient hearing and answered all their queries specially related to juvenile crime, abuse and domestic violence. She also gave an insight about how a case moves from a lower court to courts at higher levels. She explained to the students that there are separate labour courts, consumer courts and juvenile courts. Every slum or shanty has a social service organization with social servants, which looks after the welfare of the people living there. Social servants are not denied entry to jails, remand homes, if they wish to inspect the same for some human rights abuse.
Wow! That was a revelation!
Behind the soft persona of Mrs.Ghantiwala is a woman of steel and her knowledge of the law makes her a force to reckon with.

Visit to Hydropower station ,Ukai

After prolonged waiting at last we got the permission to visit the hydropower station at Ukai. It has been possible because of Mr Pankaj Gajjar ,one of our student’s father and for this we are really very thankful to him .
We are also thankful to Mr Chowdhary( Sr. Engineer,Dam) and Mr. P.R Shah for granting the permission.

Students of grade 3,4 and 5 along with their class teachers Mariyam, Priyanka and Gowri were all set to go and waited desperately for 27 th Feb morning when we started from the school at 9 a.m.
As soon as we boarded the bus all the students got into the mood of MASTI and DHAMAAL and deliberately took out the packets of Kurkure and Lays and started eating them .We were just out of Surat when all the kids started demanding for taking a break so that they can enjoy eating their Tiffin .It was quite natural because mothers today had given a variety of junk food in their Tiffin which otherwise they are not allowed to bring in school. So we had to agree to their demand and took a break on the roadside where they enjoyed eating their party food.
We the class teachers along with the special educator Ms Janaki and head of the school Mr Vardan Kabra also enjoyed eating sandwiches ,idli and dosa brought by us.

After this we took a loo break ,in absence of any other option we suggested them to go ahead behind the bushes and they enjoyed this experience too.

We were all set to start our journey again and so boarded the bus once again .

We reached Ukai at about 12.30 p.m and collected our permission letter from PR office to visit Ukai dam. When we reached ukai dam all of us were fascinated by seeing the beauty of nature over there. The water seemed to be very fresh and clean and so students could not resist themselves going into the cold water.
Kids also observed the algae and fishes in the water and were inquiring a lot about it from the teachers. They also collected the shell from the riverside and brought them to their home.
It was lunch time now ,so we all went to Ukai circuit house where we had already placed the order for serving us chole ,puri ,salad and gulab jamun.
Kids enjoyed eating the lunch and more than this they enjoyed playing in the garden even when the sun was overhead
From here we headed towards the hydropower station which was the purpose of our visit. We reached the main gate of the station ,collected the permission letter and entered the station .When we reached inside the authorities requested us to divide the students in groups of 20 so that the understanding of the concept is better.
The first group followed by the second group went to the turbine room and there a person from the electricity generation department guided them about the procedure of electricity generation .After this we went to see the view point where from the students could see how water helps in the movement of the turbine.
All the students understood the concept of power generation and usage of water.

This trip basically helped 3rd and 4thstd as they studied about water and energy respectively in their unit of inquiry .
Nevertheless, for fifth std it was a great experience to see power generation although they did not study about it but they can now understand the importance of water.

We were all back to Surat by 6,30 pm and all the students were dropped at their respective stopages.
The trip to Ukai was a good combination of knowledge and fun
