Field trip to the Rider’s Club & Dog Kennel, ESSAR Township, Hazira

Field trip to the Rider’s Club & Dog Kennel, ESSAR Township, Hazira

Excellence (Grade 6), in their UOI under the TDT – ‘Who we are’ is currently doing the unit Learning is a fundamental characteristic of humans that connects them to the world. As a part of the study, they are studying how animals learn. In order to get a first hands feel of animal learning, we went to the Rider’s Club and Dog Kennel in Essar Township, Hazira on June 26, 2009.

At the Rider’s Club, the instructor, Mr. Bhom Singh gave us an insight into the training modules of the camels and horses. He explained the methodologies used to make these animals understand and follow commands. They use a lot of appreciation and other positive reinforcement to train these animals.

At the Dog Kennel, we saw various breeds of dogs (German shepherds, bull dogs, golden terriers, pomerian, pug, Doberman). These have been trained and are used to guard the Essar premises. The dogs have been trained (conditioned) to follow the commands of their master.

Students found the visit extremely enriching and is helping them understand the learning patterns in a new light.

GRADE- 2.

Grade 2 started their Academic year with the Unit of Inquiry-“Relationships are enhanced by learning and understanding other people’s perspective and communicating our own,” The Unit falls under the transdicsiplinary theme “WHO WE ARE”
In this Unit, corresponding to the Line Of Inquiry-Acknowledging other’s perspective, the children enacted on the story “Six blind men & the Elephant.”
In the story, six blind men (not seen an elephant before) happen to touch & feel an elephant. All of them have different perception of the elephant, as each one of them happens to touch different part of the elephant (Tusk, Trunk, Leg, Belly, Ear & Tail). They start arguing until a wise man interrupts & resolves the conflict.
The dramatization was done in the class with a dummy toy elephant as well as a child playing the character of an elephant. The first time, the children enacted with the dialogues/script with them. The next time it was without the script & with a little spontaneity. The children realized how the blind men in the story would have felt, when they enacted the story with a blind fold on their eyes.
The dramatization of the story helps the children to understand the essence of the story in an easy way. Through this activity, it was discussed that “Different people have different perspectives, understanding other’s perspective helps to resolve conflicts.”
